Construction Project 5th/6th Class .
Well done to all who worked hard to create such wonderful and varied projects. Great creativity on show .
We are learning this well known poem by the late Seamus Heaney (April 1939-August 2013 R.I.P)
Where Go the Boats?
Dark brown is the river, Golden is the sand. It flows along for ever, With trees on either hand. Green leaves a-floating, Castles of the foam, Boats of mine a-boating - Where will all come home? On goes the river And out past the mill, Away down the valley, Away down the hill. Away down the river, A hundred miles or more, Other little children Shall bring my boats ashore. How we travel to school.
As a project for the Transport element of our current Green Schools efforts we looked at how we travelled to school in 5th and 6th classes and created a pie chart to display our results. We used Google Maps to calculate each pupil's daily trip to school and worked out a yearly total based on 183 school days. As a class we cover a total of 34,770 kms in a school year. 6,954 kms are covered by walkers in the class, 6,986km by bus and 25,986kms by car.Between all of us in the class we cover a distance equivalent to the distance from Kilmacthomas to Sydney N.S.W. and back each school year!! Our walkers make a combined trip that would take them from Paris to Dubai ..... but only one-way!!

Birds are flyin' south for winter. Here's the Weird-Bird headin' north, Wings a-flappin', beak a-chatterin', Cold head bobbin' back 'n' forth. He says, "It's not that I like ice Or freezin' winds and snowy ground. It's just sometimes it's kind of nice To be the only bird in town." |
The Toucan by Shel Silverstein
Tell me who can Catch a toucan? Lou can. Just how few can Ride the toucan? Two can. What kind of goo can Stick you to the toucan? Glue can. Who can write some More about the toucan? You can! |
Anteater by Shel Silverstein
"A genuine anteater," The pet man told my dad. Turned out, it was an aunt eater, And now my uncle's mad! |

This week we are learning a poem by Gareth Owen called Wellingtons.
Wellingtons.
Gareth Owen I love the wild wet winter days Of rain and slushy sleet For it’s then I fetch my Welligons I mean my rubber Gellibongs Oh dear I mean my Webbingtons And pull them on my feet. My sister Jane hates rainy days The cold makes Mary cry But me I’ve got my Wellinbots Oh dear I mean my Bellingwots No no I mean my Welltingots To keep me warm and dry. But isn’t it a nuisance Isn’t it a shame That though I love you Wellibongs I just can’t say your name. |
