Look - we made celery turn green, orange and blue! 13th June 2014
We had such fun in science this week turning celery green, orange and blue.
We learnt all about the different parts of plants and what their function was.
We put what we learnt to the test - does water travel all the way from the roots, through the stem to the tips of the leaves??
We placed sticks of celery in glasses of water with (1) blue food colouring (2) yellow food colouring and (3) orange food colouring. We placed them in the window and examined them the next day. Hey presto - they had changed colour. See our photos below.

Minibeasts - 10 June 2014
We are learning all about Minibeasts at the moment. We looked at pictures of minibeasts and discussed them - their colours, how many legs they have, how many wings they have, where they live and what they look like. We then went on a minibeast hunt in the school grounds and found ladybirds, snails, bees, butterflies, woodlice, ants, spiders and worms. We are also learning the poem 'The Minibeast Feast'.
Aistear:
Writers workshop: write an acrostic poem about a Minibeast (Butterfly, Ladybird, Snail, Spider or Bumblebee).
Creative Art: Paint and create minibeasts.
Clay: Create clay minibeasts - paint when dry!
Construction: Create minibeast hotels using junk materials.

Rainbows - 05 June 2014
We are learning all about rainbows.
In science we learnt how rainbows are formed. When light travels from the sun if travels so quickly that it looks yellow or white. When that light is slowed down by the rain it spilts and we see all the colours of the rainbow. Rain + sun = rainbow.
In history we sequenced the colours of the rainbow and in music we learnt 'The Rainbow Song'. In art we painted rainbows and then painted the background - see how colourful they look below.
We have our last week of Literacy Lift Off this week. It has been of great benefit to us - each having read
18 new books! We also wrote about each book and revised all our sounds and learnt some new blends (2 letters or more making a sound together).

People Who Help Us - 23rd May 2014
Busy busy busy! This weeks theme was 'People who help us' - photos of our week below.
In geography we discussed all the people who help us. We spoke about where they worked, what they did, what equipment they needed and what they wore. We then drew and wrote about the people who help us.
In music we learnt the song 'People in my town'. We dressed up as people who help us and recorded ourselves singing the song! This was great fun.
As part of SPHE, Garda Aidan McCarthy came to visit and he spoke to us all about how the guards help us. He also reminded us about 'stranger danger' and safety when travelling in the car. We had loads of very interesting questions for him and learnt loads! Thank you for visiting.
In English, we did some creative writing and wrote about what we wanted to be when we grow up and why we wanted to do this job - lots of variety from rally drivers to ballerinas and army men to jockeys.
In science we were learning about forces. We used our play fire brigades, ambulances, Garda cars and emergency vehicles of all kinds to experiment with and discover the difference between pushing and pulling.

Water play: floating and sinking, making boats and play with water
Construction: Building a boat using wooden blocks.
In science we experimented with various materials to discover which soaked up water and then grouped them together.
In maths we learnt all about capacity and the weather obliged which allowed us to measure our various containers outside.
We learnt all about water safety during SPHE and watched Grover in Sesame Street taking a bath!!
In music we learnt a fun song, 'Jackie the Sailor', and Mrs. Feeney recorded us singing it and we watched ourselves on the white board. We were fantastic!!
We are playing tennis in PE and having great fun.
Finally, in gaeilge, we learnt all about 'An teilifís' and took turns being 'ar an teilifís'.

We had a busy week in SPHE in line with the school anti-bullying week. We learnt what is bullying, identified that it happens more than once and used pictures to identify who was bullying and who was being hurt, read and discussed the poem 'Bullies like to Bully' and did an anti-bullying competition (winner to be announced next week!)
In Maths we were learning all about comparisons - (more than and less than) and working out by how many one number was more than / less than another number. Great fun was had in science when we learnt all about magnets and experimented with magnets to find out what they attract. In music we learnt a very happy song 'Marvellous things' which just made us all want to dance!! In PE we covered the gymnastics strand exploring movement. In Gaeilge we did the story 'An tusa mo Mhamaí' and learnt the rhyme 'Gug-a-Lí-Gug'.
Finally to end a very busy week we had a very special visitor - Mrs. Power called in with baby Cormac to say Hi. We were all thrilled to see her and she was so delighted when she saw all our great work.
See our week in photos below.

02nd May 2014
Welcome back everyone!
What a busy week we have had. We started Literacy Lift Off this week. “Literacy Lift Off” is an intensive programme of Reading and Writing. Over the course of 40 mins pupils engage in a number of “stations” where activities are tailor made to their own level of competency over time we gradually lift the complexity of the what they can do in both reading and writing. The aim of Literacy Lift-Off is to make pupils constructive learners. It teaches them ‘how’ to problem-solve independently. Thanks to Mrs. Flynn, Mrs. Keane, Ms. Creed and Anne who are coming in to help us.
We read the story of the Little Red Hen and Chicken Licken this week. We will be doing Aistear based on Chicken Licken next week. In science we learnt all about plants and the different parts of plants you can eat. We made a lovely collage of pictures of plants that we eat. In music we learnt the very happy song 'Zip-a-dee-doh-dah' and in Art we made beautiful kites and butterflies to transform our classrooom display to a 'Summer' themed display. During PE we are learning how to play rounders and exploring different types of movement. We had great fun on the grass pretending to move like animals in a zoo!! I maths we are learning all about data and sets and in Gaeilge we were visiting the 'leabharlann'. We discussed what a good friend is and how to be a good friend.

The Gingerbread Man was our theme for the past week and we have been very busy during Aistear (see photos below).
Our four play stations were:
Art: We created fabulous outfits for our Gingerbread Men using fabric and fibre.
Writing: We wrote about the Gingerbread Man. Ms. Feeney was so happy with the fantastic stories and the lovely writing.
Socio-dramatic: We had to build the old ladies oven and then we acted out the play. We were very creative and dramatic and all worked as a team taking turns to play the different roles.
Sequencing: At this work station we were very busy cutting out 8 pictures from the Gingerbread Man story and pasting it in the correct order. When we had coloured it beautifully and then made as many words as we could from the words 'Gingerbread Man'.
This week we also learnt a lovely new song 'Who built the ArK' and during Gaeilge we were learning all about the different sports we play.

Another busy week in seniors infants:
This week we were very busy with a 'Spring themed Aistear (photos below).
Our four play stations were:
Socio-dramatic - A Spring Clean - we sorted out the awful mess Mrs. Feeney made! There were toys, clothes, Spring flower jigsaws and broken toys which needed to be sorted and categorised. One group built a storage centre for the broken toys and another group built a very inventive re-cycling centre.
Planting - we planted Busy Lizzies in pots and then wrote about the process of planting.
Small world - small world play was based on the farm. We had great fun sorting out the farm animals from the Zoo animals and building all sorts of sheds, milking parlors, pens and farm houses as well as scarecrows and feeding troughs. We all got totally engrossed!
Art - we painted frogs on paper plates and cut out legs and arms to stick on. We sequenced the life cycle of a Frog during science and then stuck this inside our frogs. They look fabulous!

28th February 2014
We have been very busy for the past few weeks learning all about houses and homes. We started by discussing the reason we need homes and the different types of homes we see in our locality. We then discussed different types of homes and learnt new vocabulary such as semi-detached, bungalow, terrace..... We discussed the different rooms in our houses and had great fun doing a cutting, pasting and matching activity - matching correct furniture to the correct rooms.
In music we learnt the songs 'Gotta Build a House' and 'Cúigear Fear ag tógail tí' and added actions and sounds appropriate to these songs. We also played percussion instruments to accompany 'Gotta Build a House' - made loads of noise and had great fun!
We started AISTEAR last week and took the theme of 'Homes'. We had four separate stations - The Architect's Office, Building Site, Doll's house (small world) and Art station. The children were divided into groups and each group had a turn at each station. There were great designs created in our 'Architect's Office' - houses with swimming pools, hot tubs, disco rooms and a two story caravan. The three pigs also made appearances in the architects' office designing houses of straw, sticks and brick. The building site was a very popular station which hotels and inspiring homes being created. The small world station consisted of a dolls house, dolls and lego to create furniture and homes. The children got totally engrossed in their own world during this activity. Finally at the Art station the children designed and decorated their 'dream room'. Slides leading into hot-tubs, disco balls, popcorn makers and lots of glitter were on the agenda!!! (photos above!)

We have been busy settling back since Christmas. We wrote about our Christmas holidays. In art we learnt about printing and printed our snowmen which turned out great. We read the story of 'The Ugly Duckling' and used this as inspiration for a drama lesson and also to create 'duck masks'.
We learnt all about our 'senses' and had great fun exploring our senses. We went on a listening walk around the school where no-one could talk (!!) and later discussed all the sounds we had heard. We also went on a blind walk with a friend leading us. For taste we had to distinguish between sweet and sour samples and we had great fun on the 'touch' table with a 'feely box' which contained an unidentified object and lots of books with different textures within.
