***Star of the Week***
Every week in our class we have a 'Star of the Week'. Our teacher gives it it to the boy or girl who has tried really hard that week. They have to be in school every day, listen carefully, do their work neatly, have their homework done nicely and be kind to everybody in the class. There are lots of things to do and it is very special when someone receives the Star of the Week certificate. We also have a prize for 'Group of the week'. We have four tables: Grúpa gorm, grúpa dearg, grúpa oráiste agus grúpa glas. Every day each group must try and win some stars for their table. If my group has the most stars on a Friday, teacher gives us a prize. It is very exciting. |

We had four stations:
- Building a story board
- Writing a diary entry
- sequencing the events
- making masks and role-play.
Everyone is making such an effort and we are learning a lot about the story too.

Our Sounds this week :)
'qu' is our first sound this week. We open and close our hands 'quack, quack'.
The song is to the tune of 'The Wheels on the Bus', 'The ducks in the pond go qu, qu, qu. qu, qu, qu. Qu, qu, qu. The ducks in the pond go qu, qu, qu all around the pond' |
'ou' is our next sound. We pretend our finger has been pricked with a needle and we say 'ou, ou, ouch'.
The song is to the tune of 'Here we go round the Mulberry Bush'. 'I pricked my thumb with a needle, ou, ou, ou, ou, ou, ou, I pricked my thumb with a needle ou, ou, OUCH!' |

'ng' is one of our new sounds this week. We pretend to be weight lifters and we lift up the weights saying 'nnnngggggggg'.
The song is to the tune of If You're Happy and You Know It... 'If you're strong and you know it say ngggg, ngggg If you're strong and you know it say ngggg, nggg If you're strong and you know it and you really want to show it If you're strong and you know it say nnnnggggg'. |
'oo' is our other new sound this week. As we know 'oo' has two different sounds 'u' and 'oo'. We will sound of the word and decide which sound suits this word the best.
We move our head back and forth like a cuckoo clock and say 'u oo, u oo'. The song is: 'Who wants to be a cuckoo, who wants to be a cuckoo, who wants to be a cuckoo, say u oo, u oo, u oo'. |

Our New Sounds: 07/01/13
This week our sounds are 'ee' and 'or'. We put our hands on our head to make ears and we say eeyore, eeyore. We like 'ee' because so many words have 'ee' in them- jeep, peep, meet, coffee etc.
We learned 'or' as well. The sound 'or' is in 'corn' which is in our new story The Little Red Hen. We are excellent at our sounds.
The Song we sing goes like this:
See the donkey in his stall,
eeyore, eeyore is his call.
:)
AISTEAR!!!!
This week in Aistear we are using the theme The Little Red Hen. We will be starting our new story next week so we are using Aistear to learn the new words, the new story and to be prepared.
We have four groups and we swap activities each day.
Group 1: Constructing the farm and the mill.
Group 2: Writing a letter of apology to the Little Red Hen for not helping.
Group 3: Sequencing the parts of the story.
Group 4: Designing masks for each character and taking part in a role-play.

This week in Maths we are learning about More and Less. Today we played some fun games. Someone had to close their eyes and we all got into two lines and then the person had to tell us which line had more and which has less. It was great!
Our New Sounds :)
We are learning our new Jolly Phonics sounds in school.
1. We have done 'ai'. We put our hands behind our ears and we say 'ai' as if we cannot hear. In the story Samuel had a blocked ear.
2. We then did 'oa'. We put our hand up to our mouth because we are shocked. In the story Mona and Jonah helped the goat.
3. Our brand new sound this week is 'ie'. The captain says 'ie' 'ie' and we stand up straight and salute.

A Hippo for ChristmasOn Thursday December 6th we travelled to New Ross with the Junior Infants and First class to see the Talisman Theatre perform A Hippo for Christmas. We learned the songs before we went and we were able to sing along to our hearts content. We went on two big buses and it was a great adventure. Polly wanted a Hippo for Christmas but due to a snowstorm her letter never arrived for Santa so he forgot to bring the Hippo. He left Polly a magic spell to make sure the Hippo arrived on Christmas morning. As Santa was leaving, he got stuck up the chimney. It was so funny to see Curly Toes the elf try and help him down. We had a great day and we were so good we got treats coming back on the bus. :) |

We do lots of work everyday and school is great fun:
Aistear!
During the month of November we had lots of fun during Aistear. Our theme for the whole month was 'People at Work'. First of all we talked about the different jobs and work that people do. Then we looked at pictures and tried to guess what jobs the people had. For homework, we did a project on people we knew who had a job and the next day everyone showed the class the picture they had done of that person and told us what job that person had and what they had to do each day.
For Aistear, we picked 'The Doctors'. For an hour per day, each group had a different job to do. Everyone enjoyed it and we all learned alot about how important Doctors are.
We had five groups:

Aistear in October:
For Aistear in October we chose the theme of Halloween. It was so much fun. We had talked about Halloween in the weeks leading up to our Aistear week and we were all very excited. We had four stations:
1. Witch V Princess role-play
2. Writing: The Gardaí making a Wanted poster for the bold witch
3. Art: Making Halloween masks
4. Oral Language: Making up spells using different materials
We got to go outside looking for materials for our spells and also to hide away from the bold witch. Aistear focusses on the childrens imagination, oral language skills etc. and incorporates drama through role play for each theme. It is extremely beneficial and enjoyable for the children.

Halloween:
We had SO much fun in school for Halloween. We learned four new songs and two poems. On Friday before we got our holidays we came into school dressed up in our costumes. Ms. Briggs got very frightened and didn't know who was behind the make up and masks. That morning we went to the playground in Kilmacthomas for a sponsored play with the Junior Infants and First Class and we had lots of fun. In the afternoon we went into Mrs. Powers class and did a concert for the Junior Infants performing all our new songs and poems. We were treated to a lovely concert by the Junior Infants after this. We then had a Halloween party after lunch and teacher gave us scary treats. Thank you SO MUCH to Catherine who came and really kindly gave us Halloween balloons to take home. We are super lucky!!!
