This week we are super super busy!!
We are beginning Literacy Lift Off.
“Literacy Lift-Off”, also known as “Power-Hour” or “Guided Reading”, is an intensive programme of Reading and Writing, which gives the pupils lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency. It gradually lifts the complexity of what they can do in both reading and writing by equipping them with the necessary problem-solving skills.
The aim of Literacy Lift-Off is to make pupils constructive learners. It teaches them ‘how’ to problem-solve independently.
Diverse activities are essential for extending literacy processing power. Hence, the pupils work in ‘stations’ to carry out a number of activities in reading and writing, under the guidance of teachers and Special Needs Assistants. The programme uses specially graded “PM+” readers. Pupils are assessed and grouped according to their reading ability prior to the commencement of the programme.
We are also beginning Capacity and we are dealing with water every day! (That MAY explain the wet knees your child has been going home with). We will talk about Full and Empty and More and Less. PE this week is Tennis and we are learning how to hold the racket, balance the ball and toss the ball.
We are busy busy bees!!! See our pictures below!

On Friday, we actually did Senior Infant work. Ms. Briggs called out words like lip, map, sit etc and we wrote them in our copies. Amazing!! Even Mrs. Feeney came to see the work as well as the boss, Ms. Creed. We got special stickers and everything because we did so well.

Everyone is super busy this week. We are currently in full swing practising our Christmas play 'Wriggly Nativity'. I'd like to thank everyone for learning the lines and going over them each night. They are all great at saying them and hopefully it will all come nicely together on the day!!! .... Pressure is only for tyres as they say.....
There seems to be a bug going around the class so we had many people missing today. It gave us a chance to revise some things that we have already learned. We also have a great time painting a Christmas picture for a competition run by Stradbally GAA club. We are beginning the number four this week and our new letters are f and b. If we have lots of people absent for the week we will only be doing one letter.
We are learning about Winter for this month and this week we are on 'Winter Clothes'. We made penguins last week and the children were fantastic at painting, cutting and sticking. Don't forget we will be travelling to Clonmel on December 12th for the Christmas Show!! Very exciting!!

This week we begin our Aistear programme.
Aistear (an Irish word meaning “Journey”) is a framework for developing literacy and numeracy through play, which is very much supported and promoted by the Department of Education and Skills. In Kilmacthomas Primary School, we embrace this approach and focus on it in the Junior and Senior Infant classes. The Socio-dramatic corner in the room is a focal point, while groups of children engage in carefully prepared and structured play activity and groupwork, specifically targeting certain objectives of the Primary School Curriculum.
Our theme for this week is 'The Restaurant'.
We have four groups in our class this time:
Language to be used and encouraged: restaurant, menu, ordering, What would you like, chef, cooking and creating the food, washing up, customers, waitress and waiter.
For more information on Aistear, feel free to visit:

This week we are focussing on 2D shapes. Today we found lots of rectangles in the classroom. We were very busy.
We will also be doing m and d this week in our phonics. Pencil grip and reading are also new this week. We used our words from our folders to form a sentence and then we read it all together. It was big step and it is great that we can now put the words that we have learned into a story. Please read the note that went home today regarding pencil grip.
Our hobbies are a big topic of discussion this week. We have learned what a hobby is and we talk about them each day.

Today Dara Dever from An Taisce came to visit our school for the Day of Action for our Travel Flag. We walked to school from the Rainbow Hall and we all wore green. Later on in the day Dara took us outside to play giant Snakes and Ladders. It was so much fun and we all had a turn of rolling the dice and taking the steps up the board. We had a great day.
Matching is our Maths topic this week and we were really busy finding pairs and partners for each thing in our 'Sorting Box'.
We have a lovely timeline in our classroom that shows the stages of 'growing up'. We've lovely baby photos, toddler photos and now we have photos of us in school with Ms. Briggs. We are so grown up now :-)

We are getting used to the longer day in school and everything is going very well. Last week our Star of the Week was Lucy Jane. She was an excellent and responsible helper and she worked very hard. The Astronauts won Table of the Week. They were super quiet and well behaved all week and won the most stars for their table.
This week we are learning all about Autumn. We are looking out for the Autumn colours everywhere and we will be finding leaves, conkers, acorns etc for the nature table.
Our letters for the week are 'p' and 'n'. We are finding it hard to get the hang of 'i' so any extra practise with that at home would be great.
In Maths, we are busy sorting different types of families together and also counting different sets.

Here are some characters we should all know about for the coming year.
In our English reading scheme we are meeting lots of new friends. They all live in a town called Wandsville and they do many fun things together.
We have met Winchilla and her dog Burger already and we will meet Feena, Globby, Denzel, Ella, GG and Orin as the weeks go by. Winchilla can do magic and she carries an orange wand around with her. She is friends with teacher and she helped her make special magic wands for everyone in the class. The wands are so magical that they help us find the letter we are looking for in our rhyme book.

Tá cairde nua againn i naoínáin shóisearacha. Leo, Jóidí agus Zufaí is ainm dóibh. Ní thuigeann siad aon bhéarla mar bíonn siad ag labhairtas gaeilge an t-am ar fad.. Is aoibhinn leo a bheith ar scoil gach lá agus chun gaeilge á labhairt sa rang.
We have new friends in Junior Infants. Leo, Jóidí and Zufaí are their names. They do not understand any english because they are always speaking irish. They love being in school everyday and talking irish in the classroom.
