Active School Flag
The Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education and
Skills initiative that recognises schools which are fit and active that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school
community.
We, in Kilmacthomas Primary School are a very active school in our everyday events. In preparation for our Travel flag we have completed a walkability audit. This audit has helped us to decide which route we will walk from, to get to our school each Wednesday every week for our ‘Park n’Stride’, part of our Travel flag.
We are also taking part in an exciting programme called WASP - Waterford Active Schools Programme. The Waterford Active Schools Program aims to increase awareness in families of the importance of being active and make activity a natural part of daily living resulting in families being more active, more often.
In our school we are very lucky to have GAA coaching sessions during school time for each class. In addition to this we have after school training for the older classes. From September to November we have football training, February onwards camogie and hurling and during the Summer term we have soccer leagues and athletics.
We are very lucky to have a lovely grassy lawn at the back of our school to play sports on at yard time and for P.E. This is a great bonus for our school which gives us lots of fun happy playtimes.
We go to the Rainbow hall in Kilmacthomas every week for a P.E. lesson. The use of these facilities are great for us, to keep us fit and healthy. As well as this we get a fine nature walk to and from the Rainbow Hall each week.
Our infants are very lucky to have older children from 6th class who come and
play playground games with them on particular days at yard time. This is always great
fun. So as you can see we are a healthy active school and these are only SOME of
our great activities. This is why we are applying for the BLUE ACTIVE FLAG to show our keen interest in being active and to learn new ways in which we can improve ourselves in our school.
